Alexander “Alex” Martin knows the world most of our clients come from — because he comes from it too.

Alex grew up in a family of Mexican immigrants and spent part of his youth working in the fields, doing the same labor that sustains the Salinas Valley today. He grew up bilingual and bicultural, moving between two languages and two worlds — and he experienced, firsthand, many of the same things our clients and their families experience: the long hours, the vulnerability, the distance between working people and the institutions that hold power over their lives. Those experiences did not make him bitter. They made him a lawyer. The pursuit of justice for people the system overlooks is not a slogan for Alex — it is the reason he went to law school, and it has been the engine of his career ever since.

That career has made him one of the most experienced criminal trial attorneys on the Central Coast. Over more than 18 years — many of them alongside founding attorney William Pernik in California’s Central Valley — Alex has defended the most complex and serious cases the criminal courts see: homicides, gang murders and drive-by shootings, rape and child molestation allegations, DUI cases involving fatalities, armed robbery, felony assault, felony domestic violence, and criminal threats. Together, Alex and William have taken more than 150 jury trials to verdict. When a case has to be fought in front of a jury, Alex is exactly where he wants to be — he loves a good fight in a courtroom, and he excels both at conventional criminal defense and at going beyond convention when the case demands it.

For our Spanish-speaking clients, Alex changes what hiring a lawyer means. There is no interpreter standing between you and your defense. No translated summary of what your attorney “really said.” Alex conducts consultations, client meetings, and case strategy directly in Spanish — as a native speaker who understands not just the language but the culture, the community, and the stakes.
